Trust Your Gut: How to Develop and Use Your Intuition Daily

From a very young age, I learned to silence my own needs. Growing up with a single mother who was often unwell, I stepped into the role of caretaker far too early. I became the responsible one, the strong one—the one who didn’t ask for much. My world revolved around her needs, and somewhere along the way, I stopped knowing what I needed.

As I got older, that pattern stayed with me. I ended up in jobs that looked impressive on paper, yet failed to spark any real joy. Relationships, too, appeared “right” from the outside, but left me feeling empty and uninspired on the inside. I was smiling, performing, achieving—yet beneath it all, I felt lost. Disconnected. It was as if I were moving through someone else’s life, not my own.

And then, my body stepped in—louder than ever before. I began to feel exhausted all the time. My chest felt tight, my mind foggy, my heart heavy. Anxiety crept in, and life started to feel like a performance I no longer had the energy to keep up.

It was in this unraveling that I found something I had long ignored: my intuition.
A quiet, steady voice within me that had always been there—but buried. I started to notice how my body responded to things. A tight stomach when something wasn’t right. A lightness in my chest when I felt aligned. Slowly, gently, I began to trust my gut.

And as I did, something beautiful began to happen.
Decisions felt easier. My path became clearer. I began choosing what felt good, not just what looked good. I felt more connected, more alive—and for the first time in a long time, more me.

Understanding the Importance of Gut Feelings

Intuition helps us navigate life’s complexities with greater confidence. It allows us to sense opportunities, recognize potential dangers, and make quicker decisions without overanalyzing. When cultivated, intuition can improve relationships, career choices, and personal well-being.

Reconnecting with Your Inner Self

1. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

One of the best ways to enhance intuition is by quieting the mind. Meditation and mindfulness practices help you become more attuned to subtle signals from your body and environment. Try spending a few minutes daily in stillness, focusing on your breath, and observing thoughts without judgment. Over time, this practice sharpens your inner awareness and makes it easier to recognize intuitive nudges.

2. Pay Attention to Your Body’s Signals

Your body is a powerful intuitive tool. Physical sensations like a gut feeling, a sudden chill, or tightness in the chest can indicate whether something aligns with you. Start noticing how your body reacts in different situations—especially when making decisions. Journaling about these sensations can help you recognize patterns and strengthen your trust in your inner wisdom.

3. Keep an Intuition Journal

Documenting moments when you have a strong feeling about something—and later discovering whether it was accurate—can help validate and develop your intuition. Write down hunches, dreams, or spontaneous insights and review them regularly. Over time, you’ll notice how often your instincts were right, reinforcing trust in your inner voice.

4. Use Visualization Techniques

Visualization exercises can train your subconscious mind to become more intuitive. Try this:

  • Close your eyes and imagine a situation where you need guidance.
  • Observe any images, words, or feelings that emerge.
  • Trust your initial impressions and write them down. This technique is especially useful for problem-solving and decision-making.

5. Engage in Creative Activities

Creativity and intuition go hand in hand. Activities like painting, writing, dancing, or playing music allow you to access the subconscious mind and bypass analytical thinking. Engage in creative pursuits without overthinking—just let your intuition guide you.

6. Practice Making Small Intuitive Decisions

Start by using intuition for minor choices, such as picking a restaurant, choosing a book, or deciding what to wear. Pay attention to the immediate feeling you get about each option. As you build confidence in these smaller decisions, you’ll find it easier to rely on intuition for more significant choices.

7. Spend Time in Nature

Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body, making it easier to tap into your inner wisdom. Take walks in natural settings, practice deep breathing, and observe the sounds and sensations around you. The more you connect with nature, the more in tune you’ll be with your instincts.

8. Trust Your First Instinct

Your first instinct is often the most accurate. Instead of second-guessing yourself, practice acting on your initial gut feeling. The more you trust your instincts, the stronger they become.

9. Develop Self-Compassion and Self-Trust

Doubt and fear can cloud intuition. Building self-confidence and letting go of self-doubt are crucial for intuitive development. Treat yourself with kindness, acknowledge your past successes, and remind yourself that you have the wisdom to make the right choices.
