Paralyzed by Choices? How to Finally Make a Decision

If there were an Olympic sport for overthinking life decisions, I’d probably win a gold medal.

Should I move to another country? Start a new career? Apply for that job? Stay or leave? Sell the apartment? Write another book? Go left or right? Sometimes I can spend weeks—or even months—trying to make the “right” decision.

What I’ve realized over the years is that I wasn’t actually looking for clarity. I was looking for certainty. I wanted guarantees that everything would work out perfectly before taking the first step.

The problem is that life rarely offers that kind of certainty.

Many of us struggle with decision paralysis because we’re asking our choices to provide something they simply can’t provide: absolute safety. We want to know we’ll be happy, successful, and free from regret before we commit.

But every decision comes with uncertainty—including the decision not to choose.

Ironically, staying stuck can sometimes cost us more than making the “wrong” decision. Opportunities pass, confidence erodes, and life quietly continues moving forward while we’re still trying to decide.

What has helped me most isn’t becoming more logical or better at making pro-and-con lists. It’s learning to trust myself more than I trust the outcome.

Because here’s the truth: there is no perfect decision. There is only the next aligned step for the person you are today.

And that is more than enough.

🤔 Why We Struggle to Make Decisions

Decision paralysis isn’t usually about being indecisive—it’s often about being afraid.

We’re afraid of making the wrong choice, disappointing ourselves or others, wasting time, losing opportunities, or discovering that life didn’t turn out the way we imagined.

Underneath indecision, there is often a deeper question quietly waiting to be acknowledged:

“Can I trust myself if things don’t go according to plan?”

Many of us believe that confident people simply know what the right decision is. In reality, confident people are usually just more willing to tolerate uncertainty.

They understand that there are very few decisions in life that are truly irreversible. Most choices can be adjusted, reconsidered, or learned from along the way.

We also tend to overestimate the importance of our decisions. Our minds love creating the illusion that there is one perfect path waiting to be discovered.

More often than not, that’s simply not true.

There are usually many lives we could live and many choices that could make us happy. The goal isn’t to discover the one correct answer—it’s to choose an option and commit to making the most of it.

Another common reason we become stuck is that we’re trying to make decisions from fear rather than from alignment.

We ask ourselves:

  • Which option is the safest?
  • Which option will guarantee success?
  • Which choice will prevent regret?

Instead of asking:

Sometimes we aren’t afraid of making the wrong decision—we’re afraid of taking responsibility for our lives.

Choosing means letting go of all the other possibilities. And that can feel uncomfortable.

But uncertainty isn’t a sign that you’re doing something wrong. It’s simply part of being human.

Learning to make decisions isn’t really about learning to predict the future. It’s about learning to trust yourself enough to handle whatever the future brings.

✨ How to Make Decisions With More Clarity

The truth is, there isn’t a magic formula for making perfect decisions. But there are ways to make them feel less overwhelming and more aligned with who you are and the life you’re trying to create.

Here are a few practices that can help when you’re feeling stuck.

1. Imagine Your Future Self

Sometimes our minds become so busy analyzing the options that we forget to ask ourselves how we actually want to feel.

Find a quiet moment and imagine yourself one year from now having made a particular decision.

Ask yourself:

  • How does this version of my life feel?
  • Am I energized or drained?
  • Do I feel more like myself or less?
  • Am I growing or simply staying comfortable?

Your body often notices what your mind is still trying to figure out.

2. Pay Attention to Your Energy

Not every difficult decision feels peaceful. Sometimes the right choice feels exciting and terrifying at the same time.

Instead of asking:

“Which option scares me the least?”

try asking:

“Which option feels most alive?”

Growth often feels uncomfortable, but it usually carries a sense of expansion rather than heaviness or resignation.

Learning to distinguish fear from misalignment is an important part of developing self-trust.

3. Say Your Decision Out Loud

This sounds surprisingly simple, but it can be incredibly revealing.

Say each option out loud as though you’ve already decided.

  • “I’ve decided to move abroad.”
  • “I’ve decided to leave this relationship.”
  • “I’ve decided to apply for the job.”
  • “I’ve decided to stay where I am.”

Notice what happens in your body.

Do you feel relief? Resistance? Excitement? Tightness in your chest?

Sometimes our nervous system responds before our conscious mind catches up.

4. Return to Your Values

When life becomes noisy, your values can become an excellent compass.

Ask yourself:

  • What matters most to me right now?
  • What kind of person am I becoming?
  • Which choice aligns most closely with my values?

Decisions become much easier when they are rooted in meaning rather than fear.

5. Accept That You Cannot Control Every Outcome

One of the biggest reasons we struggle to make decisions is that we’re trying to predict the future.

The reality is that no amount of overthinking will guarantee a particular outcome.

Every choice carries both opportunities and challenges. There is no decision that comes with a written promise that everything will unfold perfectly.

What you can control is how you respond to whatever happens next.

Confidence doesn’t come from always making the right choice. It comes from trusting that you can handle the consequences of the choices you make.

6. Give Yourself Permission to Choose Imperfectly

Perhaps the most liberating realization I’ve had about decision-making is this:

You don’t need to make the perfect decision. You only need to make the next honest one.

Your choices are not permanent statements about who you are. They are simply chapters in your story.

You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to pivot. You are allowed to discover that something wasn’t for you.

Life isn’t a multiple-choice test where there is only one correct answer. It’s an ongoing process of experimenting, learning, and becoming.

Sometimes clarity doesn’t arrive before we choose. Sometimes it arrives because we chose.

✨ Final Thoughts

If you’re struggling to make a decision right now, I want to offer you a thought that has helped me countless times:

There is no version of life where you get to experience every possibility.

Every choice is also a goodbye to countless other paths—and that’s not a tragedy. It’s simply part of being human.

We often believe that making the “wrong” decision will ruin our lives, when in reality, most of our choices simply lead us to different lessons, experiences, and versions of ourselves. Life is usually far more forgiving than our anxious minds would have us believe.

I’ve also learned that indecision comes with its own cost. While we’re waiting for certainty, life continues moving forward. Opportunities pass, experiences are missed, and sometimes the safest choice becomes the very thing that keeps us stuck.

The truth is that you don’t need to trust your decisions as much as you need to trust yourself. You are far more adaptable, resilient, and resourceful than you probably give yourself credit for.

Even if you choose something that ultimately isn’t right for you, you’ll learn, grow, and make a different choice later. Very few decisions are permanent.

So instead of asking yourself:

“What if I make the wrong choice?”

try asking:

“What if I can handle whatever happens next?”

That small shift changes everything.
